Dear Commander Callum, when you mention that a radio of yours is “out for repair”, it gives me a reason to ask “Why?”. Can you please make a video about YOUR EXPERIENCES with radio RELIABILITY. Not to trash any radio or manufacturer, but, to just give an insight. As always, thank you! KQ4IXD
Your work videos are always a treat. I had to cringe when you got on your knees to hook up the batteries. My titanium knee parts don't like hard surfaces. Doing the setup as practice before going portable is a good idea. I have all my portable stuff in a tote box so I know everything is there and my portable antennas always live in the back of my truck. Looking forward to seeing the new antenna.
Just a suggestion. You should sell a back pack made to carry your portable antenna, radio and battery thermos with the optional DXCommander flask etc. with a big DXCommander emblem on it.
can't wait to see it! I keep my expedition in the back of my truck and only collapse every 3rd section. sometimes I run it straight up into a tree or lean it on a tree instead of guy it. I also use a 12.4 signature pole with a 30' chameleon vertical wire on a transformer and also run it right up the inside of a tree.. works like a charm
Look forward to learning about the ad"Venture" portable antenna. FYI, remember to lower your exciter drive power when using the amp - you cut off the amp and went to 100w then you went back to the amp still set to 100w. Surprised the Tokyo Hy-Power did not fault with that much input power, or worse!
OK, so that amp is comfortable with 100W. Originally, it was cutting out at 50W. In the repear shop, they fixed it. Had I tried 105W, it would have faulted... And I have spare matched transistors for this old girl too.
Cal, get yourself some 3:1 black heat shrink tubing and stregthen the laptop power adapter cable insulation BEFORE you break the wire strands. 73 de KD6UYK (Tim).
Lovely! Definitely the way to do it before an expedition. I was yelling at you that you still had the antenna on the radio and not the amp. I guess you didn't hear me :) In the US we say getting your panties in a twist for the same thing.
Hi Cal Missed your Friday night session. Just seen your latest one and it was saying you need a patch lead for your amp to work but you got it sorted. Catch you again on air one day. David VK3DJC
Looking forward to seeing this new Adventure Antenna Cal 👍 Nice amp btw, Iv been looking periodically for a Tokyo Hi power for a while now and they do seem to be like rocking horse shit. Do you or anyone reading this happen to know of any other decent 12v HF amps?
I could be mistaken but I believe that laptop will be able to charge over USB C, if you get a Car charger for USB type C that supports PD you'll be able to charge the laptop plus any other USB devices from your 12v supply. Would work with any future laptops too.
Many vehicles will have a shared 10A fuse and small gauge wire on the power sockets, putting a limit of 120 Watts on them. So even a PD outlet may hit that limit. For hams, running a dedicated 10g power lead to the battery (preferably through the coulumb counter on newer cars) and putting powerpoles in the cabin will give higher voltage and more power. FWIW.
@lyfandeth I'd not suggested it for running from a vehicle but for allowing easy charging of the laptop (or other USB devices) from the large battery packs Callum is using so appropriate wire gauges and fuses can be used depending on the power requirements.
Calum, your batteries are entering the power range where primary power fusing becomes strongly recommended. PITA but one good crowbar short will give you religion, fast. 😮
@@DXCommanderHQ I second @lyfandeth’s comment! There are enough crank amps in that ‘battery pack’ to start a fairly unstoppable and potentially very expensive fire if anything short circuits without appropriate fuses. It would be a disaster if this happened in the footwell of a vehicle or in a tent, or anywhere else for that matter - and I’m pretty sure your insurance company would disown you! 😢 Take great care with that much potential current - even at 12 volts. Best Regards, Peter (retired professional Fire Officer of nearly 40 years service). 😮 p.s. can’t wait to see the new antenna!
Great stuff Cal looking forward to seeing you outside and hopefully everything works out well. Take care and yours.💯🇬🇧👍
"knickers in a twist" Love it !!! 😁

Good plan.
I love that amplifier. It sang with the IC-7610 driving it!
You gave that amp quite the workout on double live stream ! That was assume ! Cheers from NY !
Always excellent presentations!
Very cool Callum!!!! The Venture, The Dominator, The Classic, The Signature and the Nebula!!!! That is a lineup of phenomenal antennas!!!!
Yeah John!
Looking forward to more etails on the Venture, sounds ideal for POTA

I want more info on the Venture. Sounds like it might be a good POTA antenna.
Oolah ! To tune a amp Bloody hell Cal you got Italian in your blood. Great video’s Cal

OK, keep watching. I'll have a trick for you!
Looking forward to the new “Venture”
Venture - you and me both. Look forward to it 😆
Love getting out and portable
👍 looking forward to the new antenna slot. Prep as you say is always good 👍 🙂
When I set up for portable ops the most important is a relief container. It has happened more than once, I get set up and the urge strikes.
Woops! LOL

I didn't hear!
The 19v to 12v converter typically are little RF noise-makers. Is there a way to choke the noise it makes?
Thanks, Cal. I look forward to more vids like this...
More to come!
Great video Cal at least you didn't let the magic smoke out That would of cost more than 50 quid lol🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh yes!

I wondered why it didn't work!
@@DXCommanderHQ Waiting to see this new Antenna. Cheers
Hello Calum
Hello!
I can always look to see all the new antenna and radio and how to make things work kk4ekk
Looking forward to seeing this new Adventure Antenna Cal 👍

Could you not find a small 12v inverter to allow the laptop to be powered from?
I'll have a look at that James! PS - Nice logo!
What is the amplifier?
Love it
Calum, your batteries are entering the power range where primary power fusing becomes strongly recommended. PITA but one good crowbar short will give you religion, fast. 😮
Well, we're sucking maybe 25A max off each battery. It would make a gooc welder though!

Great info about going portable. However Cal, you went to so much work, it tired me out. Instead of going portable, I'm going to take a nap. AA7MO
HAHA!
Cool
Wrong patch lead, done that! Icom 705 and PL259 cable ...
using amplifiers spoils it for others.
Same with 200 foot towers, pain in the ass.
None of what your doing there looks fun. Hell you dont even look like you're having a good time.
Yeah, I should maybe sometimes smile or laugh at myself.
First :)
HAHA!
